So I got into an unfortunate fender bender with the Golf today - young lady ran a red light, but in fairness I should have seen it coming so I'm kicking myself too... NO airbags, just looks like a bumper, hood, some battery coolant lines, $6000 estimate of damage...

I made sure to call VW lease and pick a VW approved repair shop... Will the lease return be affected in any way ? Will they ding me for diminished value, do you think ? Anybody experienced this ?

Also curious, if that were to be the case, what is a rough buyout of the car after a 2 y lease for a base Egolf ? 10K ? 14? If they try to rip me off I might just keep the thing.

Assuming the repairs are done correctly, there should be no penalty when you turn it in.

Lease for my 2016 base SE will be up July 31st, and residual is still $13.7k so I'd be looking at $15k for purchase after taxes. I'm still hoping they discount it, but that's about the fair market value and am not optimistic.

using a VW approved shop will really help if they try to pull something on you.

Of course the inspector will pull the car fax and see if he needs the 'deep check it'

I got T-boned in my 2015. No airbags either but they ended up replacing both door skins and the entire passenger side panel because the whole panel was only $50 more than the rear quarter panel. All the work was done at a VW approved shop and paid for by the other party. When it was done you really couldn't tell that the entire side of a unibody car had been cut off and replaced. When I turned the car in there was no penalty, maybe because I went into another lease, but I don't think so.

Thanks for the replies, good to know... Damage went up to $8000 or so

How does one get your google user content to open up so that photos can be viewed? Probably something I'm not doing that I need to do?

there's a trick - don;t copy the link to the pic from the mosaic view, open your photo and right click copy image address, it looks like that:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ve6D6SAeH_vTdhlt7v8O7Tl4WziT4p4h-baF8U7gWtCO5o3EgnA3dFkbeC_sNu0dlD_6o5PFbJYRqoRZqWjVUlJzj_HGHVi7EG9TWmH4XLqx7quaetZUYcxAVGqWYfiFxdKZZLLcqK8RVY93FUogH_OTu7XOEsjQwLi2Ho8XtA1pWMhizBHbt-38kj9RHN-GFfQfcSIZcuYK9oJt7dNJNcIfXon7Kj3VxXByOoZBKcGb7tYmNyEyJBD4TdimU62B4sIGREzJE5tDRSHprlPNlzK4tYABdeUp2JzGyeBwv68-wVQQHBs48odeXV60qjZKncQpAEvRm4AC-qe8ZUIjTbmo0m6lidiPEQfmvNSL2uhkj3DynTzSXQrljiG-9JoJ-B0SRGQyn1hWxiEN7bDjnliHvhIHoAYmn8eScAanUlV5qQAh4AbHMNr4Yv84ulwa_I3gEtUbZst36QQU50FllN_hCqvo8tl8FJHGx1Wr3K5Yk-q9EF3UEPGur4ero_mFuMpGnxn30w2H-Peh3k06bRV9AdYj6I3e9llGSppaH8ryZCZHQkAIyAtc2xmBvBIhVjyDZ-4crV2b1Ul-SnJCFTEeMwpTL79zrS6A9_g=w1337-h1003-no

then paste that ugly code as n image and it works !

The link you provided works... on my chromebook, but for the life of me, despite my options, nothing similar to your actual link shows up to be able to copy and paste, as an image.

Just blows my mind that that is $8000 worth of damage. Hell, I would have taken the rest of the car and parted it out, and just bought another used e-Golf with the proceeds. I feel for you, getting hit, but looks like only a new hood needs to be repainted? That's not so bad. probably the LED headlights are the expensive part.

Not sure that electing to not have the car repaired and doing a part out is an option since the OP said it was on a lease. That is an insane amount of $ for the apparent damage. No wonder I had sticker shock when my insurance agent told me how much to insure our e-Golf.

You guys don't know the half of it.... final bill was near $11000.

Hood, hood hinges, paint... Bumper, grill, 2 headlights (looked perfect but attachment tabs broke) and they needed some brackets that are behind the bumper rewelded... took forever to get those... then new radiator and coolant refill for batteries. Honestly that looked like $3000 of damage to me, not $11K.

The car is perfect now. Amusingly, the delayed charging (11PM to 7AM) had stopped working for me, which was annoying as I had to go plug it in before going to bed... Since they reset the car, it works again !!!! So much for blaming the Charger brand ! it was clearly the car !

also funny, the one report on the car's health (not good) after the accident... No$hit Sherlock !
Followed by 1 great report of the car being OK while it sat as above dismantled.. took 50 days to get it back...

First off...sorry to hear that - that sucks.

Your estimate seems like a lot of damage. I suspect it doesn't look as bad as the cost. My insurance company said that the rates on the e-golf (EVs for that matter) are bit higher than engine driven cars (e.g. Golf TSI). Likely due to the technology replacement cost can be higher.
