We have a 2015 SEL, and the touchscreen gets problematic as the temperature gets colder. Below the low 20's it doesn't work, effectively. It is ironic that the direct heating defroster can only be turned on via the touchscreen.

Is the newer touchscreen any better?

I have the newer touchscreen and haven't had any issues yet. Although the coldest I have seen so far this year is about -5C (about 23F). At least on mine I believe the heated windshield goes on with max defrost button on the climate control. If you want the heated windshield only, no blower, you need to access from the touchscreen.
