83 Mile EPA rated range

I'm not sure why you would expect it to have an edge; the Leaf has a 24kWh battery and the eGolf has 24.2kWh. I was personally expecting a small improvement in efficiency, but less than 5% (maybe 4 miles).

Yes, we are all waiting for the next generation of batteries. When it arrives, though, all automakers will be updating their cars. Given the fact that VW and Nissan both seem committed to a platform (and thus a fixed volume for batteries), I would expect their range to remain comparable even as the next generation increases from this one.

Is this official?

I remember reading on the VW media site that numbers weren't EPA numbers...

Here it is:
Where stated, vehicle range values are forecast manufacturer values for the USA; EPA estimates were not available at time of release. Actual mileage and range will vary and depend on several factors including driving and charging habits, weather and temperature, battery age, and vehicle condition.
