My dealer suggested it was a place to hang the orange triangle that comes with the roadside emergency kit. Pop up the hatch and hang it there for visibility. Not sure I buy this, and don't have the kit to check.

Same issue here, bought the car two weeks ago. Brought the car in because the heat didn't work at all, and thought they might look at this quirk too. Turns out there was an HVAC software update campaign released in the last 2 weeks but it did NOT resolve either problem.
