Problems with certain L3 CCS chargers

When I charge my 2016 e-Golf SEL at a L3 charger. I've encountered three possible outcomes. Charges normally at ~40 kW. The regular Chargepoint L3 chargers fall into this category. Charges, but at about 20-25 kW. I've encountered this with EVGo chargers and some "private" Chargepoint chargers...

    Change default brake recuperation level?

It shouldn't hurt anything. But do understand that it's less efficient than driving in D mode and coasting whenever you can. I mostly drive on the same city route every day, so have learned when the let my foot off the gas and begin coasting, and the car will have slowed enough by the time I hit...

    2015 eGolf Battery Life

Only real use I've found is to use ECO in the rain. Compared to normal mode, the wheels are less likely to spin when I accelerate from a stop. (If I lived where there is snow/ice, I might find a similar use for ECO+.) Aside from preventing jackrabbit starts, the biggest difference seems to be...

Most efficient LRR tire to replace Ecopia 422

Update now that I've had the new tires on for 5k miles. The mileage leveled out at around 4.4 mi/kWh. Versus 4.6 for the Ectopia. So a less than 5% loss in range. I would definitely ditch the Ectopias.

I want to replace one of the two cars with another electric car

Where are you located? Your profile says North Dakota, but you say "petrol" as if you're in the UK. If you're in North Dakota, then you're going to want to keep the ICE Golf for long trips and emergencies (e.g. need to suddenly travel 100 miles in a hurry, but your EV only has 30 miles of range...

Upgraded Steering Wheel with Paddle Shifter Regen Mode?

I think I figured it out. The peak efficiency (dark red) for most EV/hybrid electric motors is towards the upper edge of the upper-center portion of the torque-RPM range. (Source for the image...

Upgraded Steering Wheel with Paddle Shifter Regen Mode?

Someone suggested trying cruise control. And it works! If you set cruise control for 40 mph, when you go downhill the car will automatically engage regenerative braking to maintain 40 mph!

Upgraded Steering Wheel with Paddle Shifter Regen Mode?

Yeah, that's what intuitively makes sense. But what the hybrid owners figured out was that there are hotel loads (electricity used for things other than propulsion) which are present when you have the accelerator down, but disappear when you're coasting. So passing your target speed, then...

Upgraded Steering Wheel with Paddle Shifter Regen Mode?

I think what I'd want most is a "maintain the current speed using regenerative braking" mode. I've mainly been using only D and B modes in daily driving. I only touch D1-D3 on long downhill stretches where I want to use regenerative braking to maintain speed. Manually figuring out which D[1-3]...

Upgraded Steering Wheel with Paddle Shifter Regen Mode?

It's closer to 30% efficient. I've reverse-engineered the numbers based on numerous range tests people have conducted online. And the highest I've calculated has been about 35%. This is why race cars use a flywheel to recapture energy from braking (KERS). Because it's storing (linear) kinetic...

AC comes on when recirculation bitton is pressed...

In an ICE car, turning on the heater means the car pumps waste heat from the engine into the cabin. In an EV, there is no engine to produce waste heat. On higher trim models of the e-Golf, the AC is actually a heat pump - an AC that can run in either direction. In AC mode it pumps heat from...

Most efficient LRR tire to replace Ecopia 422

I pretty much agree with everything above. I got my used 2016 e-Golf with what looked like original Ecopias. Car had 30k miles on it, so probably 50% tread. Used them for half a year (Jul-Jan in SoCal so no real difference in temp from Jan-Apr). I hated them. They'd squeal on starts, skid and...

    CarPlay

That's pretty common for USB sockets designed for charging to have dummy data pins (not connected to anything). e.g. The socket in your charging AC adapter. Someone in VW's supply chain probably ordered the wrong part, and it got installed in a bunch of cars before they noticed it was wrong.

Any way to recalibrate the battery gauge?

I bought a used 2016 e-Golf in July. After several months of use, I've noticed a high degree of nonlinearity in the battery gauge. After the low battery warning comes on at 18 miles remaining, I can barely get 8 miles. At 25% it estimates ~21 miles of range, but I can barely get 12 miles. At...
