    Home charger failure???

The 1KHZ pilot varies the duty cycle. At 30A it is symmetrical. OTHER CURRENTS VARY. Nick Sayer makes a device to read the current. If you are near Disneyland in Anaheim I could loan you mine. Basically if it says at least 30A the dealer is BSing you. I do have a load tester that can check the...

    Max amperage of on-board charger?

With the exception of Tesla based cars the max charge is 32A on a 40A circuit. A 30A EVSE will handle most cars just fine. A 40A car will charge at 30A just slower. J1772 cars set the internal charger to match the available current

Recommendation for higher amp 120V EVSE

I measured my L1 supplied EVSE and it was 12A. As a dedicated unit it failed the forth over heated led acid test. There will never be lead acid batteries in a eGolf. I have equipment that reads the pilot. My current L1 EVSE is still in its sealed bag but the one from my 2014 said 8A default and...

    Max amperage of on-board charger?

I have a 40A OpenEVSE and it charged my eGolf at 30A. The car takes what it needs and it ignores the rest. The same EVSE charges my B250e at 40A. As long as there is enough current the car takes what needs. In my eGolf I had a 10A reserve that was not used.

Is it true non-Bosch level 2 chargers can be problematic?

Tell your electrician that you have an RV and that you need a 14-50 outlet installed. Saying it is for an electric car is a good way to pay top dollar.

Is it true non-Bosch level 2 chargers can be problematic?

The JuiceBox seems to be good. I do not like smart phone apps. I always install metering on my EVSEs. To me I would rather walk up tho the unit and read it. My Bryant thermostat can be read and set through a smart app. Again I live alone and I have no need for remote settings. OpenEVSE has RAPI...

Is it true non-Bosch level 2 chargers can be problematic?

I had no problems charging with my OpenEVSE. I think that any J1772 EVSE will work fine. The electrician has a vested interest in pushing the Bosch. I am sure it works fine but at what cost? I build OpenEVSE units and I built two very basic JuiceBox EVSE's. As far as I know they are still...

    OpenEVSE with RTC for sale

Quick Charge power can make any length. Using one of the 40A cables at 30A you could go to at least 35 feet. They claim 30 feet is good for full power. When I had a Leaf I switched from a 20FT cable to a 24FT cable. That was enough so I could drive in instead of backing in. A 20FT cable just...

    OpenEVSE with RTC for sale

This unit was radically revised. It now has a German 24 foot 32A Ji772 cable and two 80A 12V relays. Sorry I put the 40A cable on my EVSE in the garage. Most cars do not need 40A. This unit was driving me crazy. I changed out most of the stuff without fixing it's problem. It is working fine...

    OpenEVSE with RTC for sale

I currently drive a B250E and by default it charges to 80%. When I had my 2016 eGolf I set the timer to fully charge at 7AM. I set the initial charge level to 80%. When the car's charger shut down I unplugged the EVSE. That gave me an 80% charge. A couple of times I forgot to unplug the cable...

Federal Rebate problem if lease turned in early?

The $7500 is a one time thing. VW already took the credits on a lease. If you purchased new assuming your taxes in the first year exceeded $7500 you would get the full credit on your taxes. Used or off lease cars do not qualify.

    On-Board Charging for 2017 e-Golf

At the Long Beach Radio Shop we had both (ex propane tank shop). The electric room looked like it was part of Edison, Initially I charged my Leaf at 240V 16A but after I received permission to charge they supplied a TED to monitor my usage for the bennies. They could monitor it through the city...

    Key Fob Battery Life

It seems like 3V is not enough. I just changed out the battery and the old one measured 3.07V unloaded. It is simple to change but it seems that the fob needs 3.3V. 3.07 is within the lithium =spec.

    EVSE and data analytics

I know that Chris solved the OpenEVSE problem by including a separate 5V regulator that runs off of the 12V. Truthfully, I am totally uninterested in data. I just want an EVSE that works. I do follow the threads but that is all. I know people want reach out with their cell phones but why? My...

    Performance e-Golf Forum Needed

Well, if there is a performance forum then have fun talking to yourself. Most buy EV's for the green aspect or like myself just like the electric concept. Most like the car asis or like in my case the car is leased so major mods are out of the question. I plan to turn in the car at lease end .

EVSE "Chargers" with delay of start feature

As I understand it, the J1772 specifications are optional. If you claim J1772 compliment then you have to adhere to all of it. (unless you are in China out of reach).

EVSE "Chargers" with delay of start feature

I think the car has changed from the original 2015 car. My 5-2016 SEL works flawlessly with my OpenEVSE. In fact it works too well. I do not have tiers and I set the car to charge to 80%. At that point I usually unplug the EVSE. If I forget it will be fully charged in the morning with limited...

Charging from TT-30 socket at RV campgrounds

I replaced the stock unit and I put it on the shelf for lease return so I do not really know anything about it. I did read the pilot with Nick Sayer's display and verified 1000Hz and 12A. It fails the lead acid test but that is understandable since it is supplied with a lithium eGolf.

Washing Car, it kept 'locking' during the wash. Worried?

It is only bad if it is continuous and you do not let the motors cool off. They are rated for intermittent duty. Years ago I had an installer burn up a motor while trying to adjust it. You really need time to cool. I also lock and unlock my car while washing it. As long as it is seldom it is...

2018 e-Golf to be sold Nationwide in USA

While owning my Mercedes B I got a post card for an eGolf test drive and a prepaid credit card. When I totaled my B I remembered the dealer. I leased my eGolf there and the salesman told me that they never had an eGolf demo. I guess that is why my demo was canceled. For sure the eGolf is a CARB...
