I've read somewhere in a post here that someone took their car in for their 10,000 mile free service, and a software update was performed that addressed this fan on and 72F temp setting as the default setting, and removed it. Do a search in the technical section perhaps to find the 10,000 mile service reference.

Edit: Go to your local Vw service dept and ask your service writer for the TSB TT87-15-02 to fix this problem.
